Pilot/Escort Oversized/Overmassed Load

TLI – Training Package

The units that we cover in this training package are:

  • TLIB0002 Carry out vehicle inspection
  • TLIC3010 Pilot or escort oversized and/or overmassed loads
  • TLIE3009 Use pilot and escort communication
  • TLIF3013 Coordinate breakdown and emergencies
  • TLIF3060 Control traffic as a pilot vehicle operator
Bridge Video Supervision is also covered

The Pilot/Escort Vehicle Course takes place over three (3) days and will give you a good theoretical background and practical experience in the skills of Piloting oversize loads.

The first two (2) days of the course are spent in our training room where you are taught the theory side of Piloting and you are also assessed.

The third day of the course is spent on the road doing practical training and assessment, piloting a 4.8 metre wide load approx 350 km. The practical assessment requires each trainee to Pilot the permitted oversize load as lead Pilot and as Rear Pilot.

There is also a one day refresher course available.

Pre-requisites

As of the 28th of November 2017, the conditions to obtain your Heavy Vehicle Pilot Licence are listed below:

To enrol in a Pilot Course, all individuals must meet the following requirements:

  • Must hold a current non-probationary valid Drivers Licence
  • Pass an Assessment of fitness to drive for Commercial Drivers Examination
  • Must be physically fit
  • Must have good mobility (ie full use of both shoulders and elbows)
  • Must be competent in numeracy and literacy skills
  • Complete an application form and pay an administration fee of $205 to Main Roads

Recommended: Hold a current and valid basic first aid qualification

How long before I get my Heavy Vehicle Pilot Licence?

Once Main Roads receives all relevant documentation, it will take 10 working days to complete the licencing process, once approved allow up to 20 working days for the completion of the gazette process.

The Heavy Vehicle Pilot Licence is valid for three years. To renew your licence you are required to:

  • Hold a current Motor Vehicle Drivers Licence
  • Do a refresher course
  • Pass an Assessment of fitness to drive for Commercial Drivers Examination
  • Complete an application form and pay an administration fee of $205 to Main Roads
